Welcome to the flamingo room! We have added a few more details, including two large flamingos that have taken residence in here. Also, we added a new mattress and a shelf for toys, both from Ikea. We still need to buy some blinds or other window coverings, and of course inside the closet hasn't been touched yet.
So far the bed isn't being used, and is in fort/cave form. The mattress we got is actually quite thick and covers the sides of the bed to the top in loft position, and makes it super high in bed position. So it has caused a bit of a problem. We are not sure what we are going to do yet, maybe buy some railing walls. In the meantime Elara can play under the bed with all her pillows. One of the pillow covers I bought came all the way form the UK and is by designer LucyMadeMe, you can see it in the photo below or here. We also bought some cute flamingo artwork for the walls from Montreal based artist Amelie Legault. They are super awesome, check out more of her work here. See below for a ton of photos of the flamingo room so far!

Carpets are in and we have been working hard (and enjoying) putting these two rooms back together. We now have an office/guest room in one, and a play room (future bedroom) for Elara. She is loving being down here and asks to come down all the time. We still have lots of finishing touches to put on both rooms, but I thought I'd share what we have done so far.
We pretty well put the office back as it was and added in the guest bed. This room is actually really big and holds all this furniture quite nicely. It's so cozy now with the new carpet! We are in the process of adding curtains to the window, which at night should give the effect that it is a large window and not the basement. Hopefully it will work! I also want to hang a lantern over the bed, but I haven't convinced Jeff yet. For the most part we are done in here, just a few extras still to be done.
To quote Elara there are "lots and lots and lots of flamingos" in here. And there are more to come soon! Slowly, we are adding more and more details to this room, but here it is so far. We have large flamingo decals coming for the wall, a few more pillows, some twinkle lights, bedding, more photos, and a toy shelf. I also love hanging out in the room, it's just so much fun!
New carpets arrived this morning! They are ever so soft and plush. We spent the weekend ripping up the old carpets and cleaning the cement floors as best we could. I'm so happy with our new carpets, they make the rooms super cozy. Such an improvement over the thin, stained, cream things we had before. However, now I'm not too sure about the paint colours in both rooms, they don't seem to match the new carpet. I guess we will see once we get the furniture back in place. The large room will be our office and the guest bedroom, and the small room we will be decorating as Elara's future bedroom! Check out more on that here. Can't wait to get it all set up!
The balcony is finally done! Well, all the construction parts of the balcony are done. The glass panels are all in, the railing is up and Elara couldn't be happier running back and forth, and around and around the balcony's length. It's like a huge outdoor playpen! Next up, we need to seal the wood, add furniture, and possibly make some neat planters to go on it. I'm really impressed, and I'm thinking we will get a lot more use out of it now.
We got some new plants to mark the entrance to our house. They are just a little thing, but they add to my future modern look for the house. We just bought some simple grasses for the planters that will hopefully come back year after year, and are easy to maintain. We already had the planters, just sitting in the garage ready for something to be planted in them. The grasses just add a bit of decoration to our fairly plain front area. Hopefully we will add more in the future. The balcony railing has been finalized and ordered, and will be going up soon. Every little thing is adding to my overall vision for our place.
We have a balcony again! However, it's still a little bit dangerous as there is no railing. It's being ordered now, so hopefully soon it will go up. We will still need to stain it, but it's looking great so far.
We finally got our new house numbers up on the wall! I had bought them at the One of a Kind Show back in December, but we never got a chance to put them up until now. They are definitely more modern! I'm not sure how well they go with the rest of the house yet (yet being the important word). However, it is the direction I'd like to see everything going once we are done fixing up the outside.
We are currently working on a design for the balcony (which is falling down), and getting quotes. We plan to hire someone to do the hard work for us, leaving summer weekends for us to enjoy. Once complete we look forward to decorating the new balcony with pots of plants, furniture, and new lighting.
We got a new wall rack for our knives! Now we can store them right beside our cutting board for even more convenience. I'm loving having them tucked flat on the wall, and it looks pretty neat too.
I apologize for the lack of postings these days. Things have been super busy around here, and unfortunately it leaves little time for doing as many projects as we would like on the house. Plus, our little one is now running around which makes getting things down more of a challenge. However, we will soon have our new house numbers up, and Jeff is working away on the other half of the shelves to go beside the fireplace. Hopefully I will get to post about those soon. We are also in the planning stages for our balcony out front. Lots more to write about coming up!
I know, it's such a little thing, and hardly something to be excited about; but we haven't had a toilet paper holder in our bathroom for a long time, and now we do! It's actually a towel ring made by Moen. We didn't like any of the toilet paper holders that we saw (and I have been looking for awhile now). However, this towel ring works well for the toilet paper, and has the modern look I wanted. It's the little things in life worth getting excited over.
We finally got some art on the wall in the guest room. It had been sitting bare for many months now. I'd still like to get more for the other walls, but at least there is something to look at over the bed now. These are photos I took while walking along the waterfront near our house (as seen below). I really liked how they turned out, and I thought it was a good idea to showcase the surrounding area to our guests. Hopefully we will get other pieces on the walls in the future. Maybe more local art?
